Winter can present difficulties for locks and freezing temperatures can pose few problems but there are steps you can take to protect your locks from freezing. Here are some smart techniques to protect your locks:
Lubricant your locks
Apply silicone based lubricants inside the lock keyhole to prevent internal parts from freezing.
Cover the Lock With a Magnet
Place a magnet on top of the keyhole I will sticks to the metal component inside the lock and keep it from freezing.
Use Alcohol Based Hand Sanitizer
Spray some hand sanitizer on your key and insert it into the lock and repeat this several times. This should be sufficient to defrost the ice inside the lock thanks to the alcohol in the sanitizer.
De-Icer
Use the De-Icer to blew into the lock keyhole rapidly to dissolve the ice.
Heat the Key
If your door lock freeze warm up the key by holding it over a lighter or dip it in a cup of hot water but make sure to wipe it before putting it into the lock.
Use Vaseline
Put a small amount of Vaseline on the key and rub it before inserting. This will help melt the ice and provide lubrication to the lock and prevent it from freezing in the future.
